Reflection of Oregon Standards for Technology

The big picture of the Oregon technology standards is to provide students with tools of technology in order for students to be creative, solve problems, collaborate with others, research, and to promote digital citizenship, and understand basic technology concepts.
One strategy I would use in my classroom in the middle school to promote digital citizenship would be to have the class make a blog page. Teach the students what to include and what not to include on the page.
Another strategy I would use would be to show students that they can analyze something in class by using technology, such as Yodio, to have class discussions.
Another strategy I find important is to show students what types of sites should be used to find academic information and others that are not as reliable. A teacher can show students peer edited articles vs. wikipedia.

Some challenges might be that many schools are limited in the technology available. Another challenge might be that many students do not have computers at home, so we need to be cautious about assigning tasks for students to accomplish outside of school. Other than that, I think technology is a very important resource that we need to teach students and incorporate in our education system.

Screen Toaster Presentation

The screen toaster application is a very useful tool that I would definitely use in my future classroom. This could be used for when students are absent and I could also upload it for students who need a refresher on certain topics. It was very cool how you could select certain areas of the screen to record, or use full screen. Great way to engage students while using technology.

Excel Assignment

http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=t4crzknJzO-Qm0eCPP2PX5Q&single=true&gid=0&output=html

I feel that this google spreadsheet was very useful because it provides teachers with evidence of students progress throughout the year. I was able to filter out people who were scoring below average on the tests and see the improvement they were making on average. The graphs showed that though the students were scoring below average, they were doing significantly better on each test. This will be very useful in the classroom to calculate averages and SD's for each unit.

ODE website

I really enjoyed/learned a lot from looking at the ODE website. When looking at the challenging high-end learners it was very helpful to look at grade level benchmarks and standards that they must hit. It gave me a good understanding of what they need to learn and also gave me activities to engage them in high-end thinking. I especially like the lesson plan that goes deeper into character analysis. I think this will be a useful tool when I am teaching the outsiders to my class. This section was useful to look at because it gave objectives for each type of TAG student for example; Intellectual or Academic. Also, the graphic organizer section was amazing on what I should have students learn about a character or a section in a book. It gives sheets for character analysis or conflict. This can be very useful in my LA class.

I was looking at sample tests for the 8th grade reading test. I felt that this test was fair because most of the content is covered in class. It is important for teacher to cover this content in-depth in class by providing analysis exercises of characters in books and enriching their vocabulary. I feel that if teachers are covering all of the standards that are required and making sure that students are comprehending, then students will do very well on the state tests. What I don't understand is why some students are doing so poorly on the state testing? Is it because we dont have effective teachers? Or is it language barriers? I would like to see more research done about why some schools arent doing as well as others.

The most valuable tool that I found on this website was to use the searchable standards. I just typed in that I wanted 8th Language Arts and it gave me all of the standards that 8th graders must meet. This was very helpful because this aids me in figuring out what types of lesson plans I will make and what students should be learning when I teach.

OTEN

Web 2.0

I believe that Web 2.0 is a web-based place where you can use applications and services. Many of these applications provide storage and document security. Others are used to convert images online into PDF's on your computer.

The first application that I will use as a teacher is the drop box. This will be useful because I can have my lesson plans saved on this site, and if anything happens to them, they are saved online. I can also save grades on this site, so I can access them at home.

The second application that I plan to use in my teaching is screen toaster. This allows me to create lesson plans and tutorials online so that students do not have to crowd around my computer when I am explaining something new. I can then link this up to the projector and help students through a tutorial while I narrate the presentation.

I feel that I can incorporate technology in many ways into the classroom. Students can use blogs to answer questions that I pose in class. They can also comment on other classmates posts. I can also have students create Yodios on a picture project and have classmates comment and ask questions. If students are absent, I can put instructions on a blog to inform them what they missed.

Hello! My name is Jen and I am attending Willamette University. I am part of strand two and focusing on elementary school and middle school. I am getting endorsed in ESOL, Language Arts, and Science.

I love to do many things on my day off. I love to work out, run, and read. Along with working out, I love to be outdoors. I love to go hiking and camping with my boyfriends family.I also like to watch movies and go out to coffee with my friends. I don't get a lot of downtime, so it has been a while since I have done these things.
